Sylvia heads to school for the first time with high hopes of making new friends. Her hopes are quickly dashed when her small brother and sister embarrass her in front of her future schoolfellows, and, when she arrives at the school, she finds that there is a stark divide between boarders and day-girls and she's on the wrong side of the divide. Even saving the life of the head girl isn't enough to break down the barrier and becoming a pupil-teacher only reinforces her isolation. Yet through all the trials and tribulations, Sylvia remains determined to study hard and do her duty, no matter how difficult it seems.
