The Adventures of Jig & Co
Jane Paterson Milne
This is a school story and a thriller too: it is full of fun and also of adventure, and the little mystification with which it begins suddenly and surprisingly turns to earnest. “Jig”—Jennifer—and her four chums don't know whether to count themselves lucky or the reverse when detached from the rest of the school to share a study in the new house, under the rather stern Miss Chester: they feel sure they are unlucky when they become objects of interest to the strange and even terrifying lady, Jig’s Great-Aunt Emily”, who lives in a mansion near. She wants to prove what kind of girl Jig is, and adopts strange methods of doing it. Jig, very high spirited, won’t be patronized. Queer complications arise: mysterious letters perplex Jig & Co., and lead them into exploits of which some are too exciting to please even those spirited young ladies, brave and enterprising though they are. Thrills and mysteries follow one another in rapid succession, and the story moves at a gallop to a denouement as satisfactory as it is sensational and unexpected.
