The Mystery of Gaily More
Jane Paterson Milne
And a pretty tangled mystery it is for all concerned. This is a new type of school story, full of an unusual kind of adventure and excitement. The mystery begins to form when Hazel Warnford sets off for school, and in the train meets her double, Abigail More, who likes to be called Gaily. Neither of the girls wants to go where she is supposed to be going—Hazel to school and Gaily to relatives of whom she knows next to nothing, and, on Gaily’s urgent plea, Hazel agrees to exchange identities for a week. Neither has any idea of the tangle in which this will get them both, or of the interests involved in their affairs. That tangle, and its gradual unravelment, chiefly by the daring efforts of Hazel and a group of her school chums, makes the story. There is plenty of fun as well as tense excitement, and the reader will find as much interest in following the various crossing threads of the plot as do the young heroines. The climax of the last chapter, bewildering to most of the actors, is thoroughly satisfactory, a most unexpected and fitting finale.
